go back…. GO TF BACK… okay, that was a little too aggressive..
… but not to the end, the end is too loud.
take your ass all the way back to the beginning.
week one, maybe week two….
week one… is even better…
the part everyone calls the good part.
he’s texting first.
he’s funny.
you’re smiling at your phone n shit! in the grocery line like the joker!
now slow it down. there was a moment. a sentence he said a little too casually.
a joke that landed wrong.
a plan that fell through, and a reason that arrived too fast. you felt it. a small drop in your chest, gone before you could name it.
that was him.
that was the whole man, introducing himself.
here is the only predictor you need, and it isn’t a trait you have to dig for. it’s a timeline. a fuck boy tells you who he is in the first two weeks. every time. the pattern isn’t that he hides. the pattern is that he announces, and you negotiate.
he didn't hide it
you've been told these men are masters of disguise. they aren't. most of them are barely trying.
the problem was never that he concealed it. the problem is that you heard it, clearly, and then ran it through a translator built out of hope, loneliness, and the quiet belief that you'd be the exception.
he said the thing.
and guess what!?
you edited it into something you could live with.
so let's put the originals back.
the five times he told you and told you without shame!
1. "i'm honestly a good guy."
what you told yourself: he's been hurt before, he wants me to know he's different.
what it was: a man arguing his case before the trial started. kind people don't open with a character reference. when he has to tell you he's a good guy, he already knows the evidence will say otherwise, and he's hoping the label shows up before the behavior does.
2. "soon." "this weekend for sure." "i'll make it up to you."
what you told yourself: he's busy, he means it, look how sweet the texts are.
what it was: a promise with no delivery date. his words were fully committed. his calendar never got the memo. when effort and language don't match, the effort is the truth and the language is the advertising.
