There’s a famous Aesops Fable, the little boy that cried wolf. The boy was the liar.
The story never mentioned what happens when the wolf learns to file the incident report.
On April 17, 2026, UN Women held a press briefing in Geneva and announced that more than 38,000 women and girls had been killed in Gaza between October 2023 and December 2025. Sofia Calltorp, the agency’s chief of humanitarian action, told journalists that women and girls had “accounted for a proportion of deaths far higher than those observed in previous conflicts in Gaza.” Reuters ran it. Newsrooms worldwide followed.
There is one problem with that number.
It doesn’t match Hamas.
Not Israel’s figures or 3rd party, independent assessments. And not the data produced by the Gaza Health Ministry, which is itself run by Hamas and has its own well-documented history of inflated casualty counts. UN Women’s 38,000 is nearly double what Hamas’s own records show.
The wolf wrote the damage report and the village ran with it and sent it off to the press.
