I’ve been writing about the grid for over a year and I would love to stop. Every time I decide I’m done, the government does something that puts me back in the chair, and this week it was a Navy contract, which sounds boring. The boring documents are where they keep the real stuff. Nobody hides anything in a press release.
So here’s the contract, explained the way I had to explain it to myself. The Navy has a special account for war zones. It’s existed since 2021 and it exists for one job, which is building livable camps in places where nothing works. No power. No water. No internet. Afghanistan, Sudan, the edges of Ukraine. You show up somewhere dead and you unload civilization off a truck, because the whole premise of the account is that you assume nothing at your destination is going to work.
In July 2025 the money went inwards.
They pointed the account at America, and the spending limit went from ten billion dollars to fifty five billion in six months. The official purpose is detention, and that purpose is real and horrifying and other people are covering it well. But I’ve been staring at the grid for a year, and when I read the shopping list I noticed something, and it isn’t about who goes in the tents.
It’s about what the tents don’t need.
