After several trip around Asia, and I have to tell you, the place is full of economic lessons. Some of them are more obvious than others. But perhaps the most important one comes from an unlikely source: the elephant. That enormous, lovable, four-legged eating machine may be the perfect metaphor for what Washington is doing to your your accumulated wealth and of course your retirement savings.
An adult Thai elephant can easily consume 300 to 400 pounds of food every day. We’re talking bananas, sugarcane, grasses, leaves and just about anything else growing within reach of its trunk. That’s a hell of a grocery bill, even in Thailand. And unlike your average American retiree, the elephant doesn’t have the option of switching to the senior early-bird special when prices get out of hand.
But there’s an even better story here, and it goes back centuries.
The King’s Gift That Could Bankrupt You
In old Siam, today’s Thailand, white elephants were considered sacred animals, symbols of royal power and divine favor. According to a famous old legend, when the king wanted to punish a troublesome courtier, he didn’t have the poor fellow arrested or beheaded. He gave him a white elephant.
Sounds pretty generous, doesn’t it? Imagine receiving the keys to a Rolls-Royce from the king himself. Except this Rolls-Royce weighs several tons, eats hundreds of pounds of food daily, and requires constant attention. And because the elephant was sacred, you couldn’t very well hitch it to a plow and make it earn its keep.
The recipient was stuck feeding and caring for the magnificent beast until the expense ruined him. Historians debate whether kings actually employed this particular method of financial assassination, but the story gave us one of the great expressions in the English language: a white elephant, something that looks valuable but costs a fortune to maintain.
Which brings us to Washington, D.C., where the government has perfected the art of breeding white elephants. And unlike their Thai counterparts, these elephants reproduce without limit.
The Elephant Sitting in Your Account
Most people approaching retirement believe that keeping a substantial portion of their savings in cash, CDs or conservative fixed-income investments is the prudent thing to do. After all, the principal is relatively safe, the statements arrive every month, and the numbers don’t bounce around like a drunken sailor.
But there’s a problem. The balance on your statement and what that money will actually buy are two entirely different things. A dollar that remains a dollar while everything around it gets more expensive isn’t standing still. It’s going backward.
For those of us old enough to remember the inflation of the 1970s, this is hardly a revelation. We watched our parents struggle with rising grocery bills, gasoline prices and mortgage rates that eventually reached levels today’s homebuyers would find almost unimaginable. We learned that inflation doesn’t have to confiscate your money to steal it. It merely has to make everything you need more expensive.
Now we’re watching a remarkably familiar performance, although Washington has upgraded the technology. Instead of relying on printing presses, we can manufacture trillions in new obligations electronically. Same basic economics, considerably less ink.
The latest federal fiscal numbers ought to frighten anyone who thinks inflation has been permanently conquered. Washington just finished fiscal 2026 with a deficit of approximately $1.99 trillion. Meanwhile, September’s Consumer Price Index showed inflation running at 3.7% annually.
That’s quite a feeding program. And the elephants aren’t getting any smaller.
Your $100,000 White Elephant
In my new upcoming 10-page inflation report and Five-Year Forecast, I examine what continued dollar depreciation could mean between now and 2031. The numbers are revealing, particularly for retirees whose financial plans assume the dollar will maintain something resembling its present purchasing power.
Consider $100,000 sitting in an account that earns no interest. Under the inflation path modeled in my report, here’s what happens to its purchasing power, measured in 2026 dollars.
In 2026, your $100,000 buys $100,000 worth of goods and services. By 2028, its buying power has fallen to approximately $93,440. And by 2031, you’re down to just $84,930.
You haven’t withdrawn a penny. Your bank hasn’t failed. Nobody has hacked your account, and no Bernie Madoff has run off with the proceeds.
Yet you’ve effectively lost $15,070 in purchasing power.
Now multiply that by five for someone holding $500,000 in cash that earns nothing. That’s $75,350 in lost buying power over five years, using the same forecast. And if actual inflation runs higher than projected, the damage gets worse.
Of course, interest can offset some or all of that erosion. The real issue is what you’re earning after inflation and taxes. A respectable-looking interest payment isn’t much consolation when your living expenses are growing even faster.
That’s the beauty of Washington’s white elephant. It doesn’t need to reach into your bank account and physically remove your dollars. It just eats away at what they’re worth.
Washington’s Favorite Animal
Here’s where the analogy becomes particularly appropriate. A real elephant needs to be fed whether tourists show up at the sanctuary or not. You can’t explain to a four-ton mammal that tourism revenues are down, agricultural prices are soaring, and perhaps he’d consider skipping lunch for the good of the enterprise.
He wants his bananas, and he wants them now. And trust me, you don’t want to be around when that beast misses a meal. It ain’t pretty, that’s for sure.
Washington operates on roughly the same principle. Social Security, Medicare, defense spending, government salaries, debt service and a seemingly endless assortment of programs all require funding. Some expenditures are necessary, others are wasteful, and some seem to exist primarily because politicians discovered that giving away other people’s money is an excellent way to get reelected.
But here’s the difference. When a Thai elephant owner runs out of money, he has to find more income, get help or reduce expenses elsewhere. (There’s even a food stamp/ebt program for elephants from the UN) Washington can borrow the money and send the bill to future taxpayers. When deficit spending and monetary policy contribute to persistent inflation, holders of dollars can wind up paying part of that bill through diminished purchasing power.
The elephant keeper has to buy more food. You have to accumulate more dollars just to maintain the lifestyle you already have. And the cruelest irony is that the people who spent their lives saving, investing conservatively and avoiding unnecessary risks can wind up bearing a disproportionate share of the cost.
You Can’t Retire on Paper Promises
I’m not suggesting you empty your bank accounts and buy an elephant’s weight in gold. Although, given what’s happened to the dollar over the past century, the elephant might have been the better investment.
There is a reason I’ve spent so much of my career discussing gold, silver, sound money and assets whose value isn’t entirely dependent upon the government’s fiscal restraint. Precious metals have their own risks and price cycles, but they can’t be manufactured by an act of Congress. There are also productive businesses and other investments capable of generating returns that outpace inflation.
The objective isn’t to abandon financial prudence. It’s to recognize that a retirement plan built on fixed nominal dollars may be considerably riskier than its owner realizes.
You don’t have to believe we’re heading for hyperinflation or some spectacular collapse of the monetary system. Ordinary, persistent inflation can do plenty of damage all by itself. A few percentage points, compounded year after year, can quietly consume a substantial portion of your life’s savings.
And unlike a real white elephant, you’ll never hear it chewing.
Find Out How Much Your Dollar Could Lose by 2031
I’ve put together a new 10-page report examining 2,400 years of inflation, from the ancient world to modern Washington, along with my detailed Five-Year Dollar Forecast through 2031.
We examine why governments repeatedly debase their currencies, why the process is so difficult to stop, and what the numbers could mean for your own savings and purchasing power. You’ll also see why the next five years may prove especially challenging for people who assume yesterday’s dollars will buy tomorrow’s necessities.
