Hi MC360 Community!
Ever find yourself feeling like your symptoms just don’t add up?
Your bloodwork looks “normal” and you’ve been told you are fine. Meanwhile, you’re dealing with strange sensations, sensitivities to everything, and symptoms that often get written off as “stress.”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. And it’s much more common than you might think.
In the Mast Cell 360 clinic, mold is one of the most common root triggers we see for Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and Histamine Intolerance.
**Toxins from mold (mycotoxins) are strong mast cell activators. **
Mold Toxicity is also often hidden. It rarely looks like a classic mold allergy with sneezing and watery eyes. Instead, it can show up as neurological, gut, and nervous system symptoms that are easy to miss or blame on something else.
Today we’re sharing 10 signs that may point to Mold Toxicity. The first five are what we consider “tell-tale” signs, because they’re often very specific to Mold Toxicity. The second five are other clues worth paying attention to.
This post is for informational purposes only. To read our full disclaimer, please scroll to the bottom of this post.
1. Internal Vibration or Tremor
Mold exposure can significantly disrupt nervous system signaling. One of the most unique and classic results is a feeling of trembling on the inside of your body, while nothing is visible from the outside.
Many people describe it as a mild earthquake happening inside their body. If you’ve experienced this, you know exactly what we mean.
2. Lightning-Bolt or Ice-Pick Nerve Pain
Mold toxins can also damage nerves and activate pain-sensing neurons. The result can be a searing, intense pain that hits fast, then disappears. It often moves around the body from one spot to another.
3. Strange Skin Sensations
The nerve effects of Mold Toxicity can also show up on the skin. Some people feel like bugs are crawling on them. Others feel a burning sensation, even though there’s no actual burn.
4. Sensitivities to Everything
Foods, chemicals, supplements, medications, sound, light, touch, EMFs. Have you felt like you were reacting to everything?
We hear this one often, and we get it. Mast cells sit near every nerve ending in the body, so your nerves and mast cells are constantly talking to each other. When mold disrupts or starts controlling that communication, sensitivities can show up in all kinds of ways.
5. Frequent Static Shocks
Do you get zapped every time you reach for a door handle, hug someone in a wool sweater, or pet your cat? It’s been proposed that this may be related to the sweat glands dumping extra salt through the skin, and salt in water conducts electricity. This may be linked to how mold toxins affect the kidneys and hormones like ADH (antidiuretic hormone), which help regulate kidney function.
Not everyone with Mold Toxicity has the tell-tale signs above. If you have even one of the following, mold is still worth considering as a mast cell trigger.
6. Stubborn, Recurring SIBO
A huge part of your immune system lives in your gut, where it keeps bacteria in balance. Mold toxins can disrupt that balance, affect bile flow, and slow gut motility, which makes bacterial overgrowth more likely.
If your SIBO keeps coming back despite repeated protocols and SIBO diets, mold toxins may be keeping your gut from fully recovering.
7. Persistent Lyme or EBV
Mold can make it harder for your immune system to fight off bacteria and viruses, and they increase inflammation that can worsen Lyme and EBV symptoms. Neil Nathan, MD, a Mold Toxicity and Lyme expert, has observed that many patients with chronic Lyme that just won’t go away also have Mold Toxicity.
8. Anxiousness, Low Mood, or Feeling on Edge
The effect of mold on nervous system signaling and neurotransmitters can leave you feeling panicky, on edge, or overwhelmed. It’s a common pattern we see in clients with Mold Toxicity.
9. Hypermobility
Mold Toxicity (and Bartonella) can create inflammation that interferes with how the body maintains connective tissue, contributing to extra-flexible, achy joints. There are genetic forms of hypermobility, which can be more complex to address. But improving inflammation can make a difference. And the kind we see linked to mold improves dramatically and often starts to even reverse as people detox.
10. Chronic Sinus Issues
Mold can irritate the sinuses and activate mast cells there, leading to swelling and extra mucus. Mold can also colonize the sinuses, which means even more mycotoxin exposure.
The list doesn’t stop at ten. Other common symptoms we see in the clinic include:
Chronic fatigue
Insomnia and other sleep issues
Headaches and migraines
Brain fog and memory issues
Gut problems like IBS, constipation, or diarrhea
Tinnitus (ear ringing)
Histamine and Salicylate Intolerance
Trouble detoxing heavy metals
POTS and dysautonomia
Not everyone has all of these symptoms or conditions. But when we see a pattern, mold is high on our list.
A few important notes:
**Get a medical screening.**It’s important to rule out other conditions. Bartonella commonly associated with Lyme Disease can also mimic the tell-tale signs above.**Consider testing.**A urine mycotoxin test is one of the best ways to find out if mold toxins are part of your picture.**Go slowly.**If you do have Mold Toxicity, detoxing too fast or in the wrong order can make you feel much worse, especially with MCAS.
Knowing the signs is the first step. Understanding what mold and mycotoxins actually do in your body, and what you can do about it, is where things start to shift.
