Most people do one of two things with Claude.
They either use it raw and never touch the skills ecosystem. Or they install random things from GitHub and hope Claude suddenly becomes ten times smarter.
Both are a mess.
The better move is smaller and more practical. Pick a few skills that teach Claude how to work better, then pair them with a few repos that give you better context, better tools, better testing, and a cleaner workflow. Anthropic now supports pre built document skills plus custom skills across Claude, while Vercel and others have turned skills into a much bigger open ecosystem with installers, published directories, and reusable packages.
What follows is not a giant dump. It is a filtered list for real use. The first 20 are the skills and skill packs worth knowing first. The next 20 are the GitHub repos that make the whole thing more useful once you actually start building.
First, what is a skill and what is just a repo
A skill teaches Claude how to do something in a repeatable way. A repo is usually the place where that skill, plugin, server, framework, or workflow actually lives. Skills improve behavior. Repos give you the files, scripts, docs, and tooling behind that behavior. Anthropic’s own docs describe skills as packaged instructions, code, and resources that Claude loads when needed, not just extra prompting.
