President Donald Trump declined to rule out using a national-security emergency to change 2026 election rules after media host Wayne Allyn Root urged him to bypass Congress and expand presidential control over voting.
According to The Daily Beast and Democracy Docket, Root proposed an emergency if Congress fails to pass the SAVE America Act, proposals that would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and photo identification in federal elections.
Trump had already urged the Senate to pass the measure, calling for photo ID and proof of citizenship and accusing opponents of photo-ID requirements of wanting “to cheat.” He also called mail-in ballots “so corrupt.” Root then proposed “a national security emergency for elections” that he said could produce “photo ID, proof of citizenship, and a limit to mail-in ballots” without waiting for Congress. Later, Root called the idea “the Save Act on steroids.”
“Let me just say, stranger things have happened,” Trump replied. “I’ll leave it at that.”
