Bloomberg reported Friday that President Donald Trump again encouraged President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week to travel to Moscow for talks with President Vladimir Putin, despite repeated reported Russian plots to assassinate the Ukrainian leader.
Zelenskyy has said Ukrainian security services foiled at least five Russian plots against his life. A communications adviser to Zelenskyy subsequently disputed Bloomberg’s account, calling it false.
According to Bloomberg, Trump raised the idea during his Sept. 22 meeting with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The news organization reported that Zelenskyy declined and that people familiar with the Ukrainian president’s position said Trump’s decision to raise Moscow had upset him. Bloomberg said the White House did not respond to a request for comment.
Dmytro Lytvyn, a communications adviser to Zelenskyy, later denied Bloomberg’s account, according to Ukrainian news reports.
The latest account is disputed. But Trump publicly raised the possibility of Zelenskyy traveling to Moscow earlier this year.
