And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.— Luke 16:9
The chapter numbers in our Bibles were added centuries after Luke wrote, so the prodigal son and the shrewd manager were meant to be read together. One detail joins them. The younger son squandered his property (Luke 15:13). The manager was accused of wasting his possessions (Luke 16:1). In Greek it is the same verb, diaskorpizō (διασκορπίζω), to scatter. Two men, both scattering what belonged to someone else.
The audience has changed, though. Luke 15 answers the Pharisees who grumbled that Jesus ate with sinners (Luke 15:2). Luke 16 opens with Jesus turning to the disciples (Luke 16:1). The first chapter shows the Father’s mercy. The second asks what the Father’s people will do with what He has put in their hands.
A parable is like a prism. Hold it up and the light breaks into colors you could not see before. This one has three figures, and once we know who they are, a hard parable becomes a clear one.
The rich man is God. The manager is the disciple, which means the manager is us. And the debtors are people who owe the master, which is everyone. Sin, in Scripture’s own language, is a debt (Matthew 6:12). The world is full of people carrying a debt to God they cannot pay.
That is the whole story in one line. God owns everything. We manage it for a while. And all around us are people in debt to Him.
The manager was not a partner or an heir. He was a manager, someone trusted to handle what was not his. Our time feels like ours. So do our health, our abilities, even our children. Paul punctures all of that with one question: What do you have that you did not receive? (1 Corinthians 4:7). Nothing, if we are honest. Every hour was handed to us.
The manager’s trouble was not that he held the master’s goods. It was that he lived as if they were his.
Then the notice came. Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager (Luke 16:2).
Everything in the parable turns on that sentence. Until then he had assumed the arrangement would go on forever. Now he knew there was an end, and that someone would look at the books. Our lives run on the same terms. This position, these hours, this strength: none of it is permanent.
Teach us to number our days, the psalmist prayed, that we may get a heart of wisdom.
— Psalm 90:12
A person who knows there is an end stops living loosely.
I have decided what to do (Luke 16:4). He called in the master’s debtors one by one. A hundred measures of oil became fifty. A hundred of wheat became eighty (Luke 16:5–7). While the master’s books were still in his hands, he used them to cancel other people’s debts.
And the master commended him (Luke 16:8). Not for his dishonesty; the text calls him dishonest in the same breath. For his shrewdness. He saw the end coming, and while there was still time he spent what he held on lightening other people’s loads.
Now read the parable through the prism. If the master is God, and the debts are sins, then what the manager did was bring people out from under what they owed. That is exactly what Jesus was doing all through Luke. To a paralyzed man: Man, your sins are forgiven you (Luke 5:20). To a weeping woman: Your sins are forgiven (Luke 7:48). Salvation, put in the plainest terms, is a debt cancelled.
And Jesus has put that work into His disciples’ hands. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18). On the evening of the resurrection He breathed on them and said, If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them (John 20:23). Christians have understood the exact shape of that authority differently across the centuries. But no tradition disputes what it means at its root. God has entrusted the announcement of His forgiveness to people like us. We hold the books. We can open them for someone.
Jesus said the same thing another way at the end of His kingdom parables. Those who understand the kingdom are like a scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven, a master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (Matthew 13:52). A scribe held the records. He knew what the house contained and what had been settled. That is our position. We have seen the ledger. We know the Master has already paid what these people owe, and most of them have never been told. A scribe who keeps that to himself is failing at the one thing he was trained for.
One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much (Luke 16:10). If you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? (Luke 16:12). Then the line Matthew also records in the Sermon on the Mount: You cannot serve God and money (Luke 16:13; Matthew 6:24). Jesus does not end the parable with the manager. He ends it here, and the line is not about greed. It is about ownership.
Money is the plainest test of which master we serve, because money can be spent in only one direction at a time. Spent on ourselves, it serves us. Spent on the people around us who owe God, so that their load is lighter and they hear that the debt has been paid, it serves Him. There is no third option. Every dollar, every hour, every gift in our hands is already going one way or the other.
Here the two chapters meet. In Luke 15 the father says to his older son, all that is mine is yours (Luke 15:31). In Luke 16 Jesus asks the disciples to say it back. *All that is ours is His. *And what is His was given to be spent on people who cannot pay.
There is a mercy tucked inside this parable. The manager had been wasteful, and the notice was deserved. But between the notice and the handover there was still a window. He could still act. He turned around, and he was praised for it.
We are living in that window. I find that both sobering and kind. If the account were called today, most of us would find more of our own name in the ledger than God’s. But the books are still open. There is still time to spend what was never ours on someone still carrying a debt to God, and to tell them it has already been paid.
Nothing in our hands is ours. All of it was given so that someone could be forgiven.
Stay here for a moment.
Nothing in our hands is ours. Every account we hold was given to us to manage, not to keep. The question is not what we have done with our money. The question is what we have done with the people it was meant to reach.
Stay with that.
Lord, I confess that I have lived as an owner when You made me a manager.
My time, my strength, my gifts, even the people I love most. None of them are mine. You entrusted them to me.
The father in Your story said to his son, all that is mine is yours. Let me say it back to You. All that is mine is Yours.
While the books are still open, teach me to spend what You have given on people who cannot pay. You have put the word of forgiveness in my hands. Let me not bury it. Let me carry it to someone this week and tell them what You have cancelled.
Let me use what I have to cancel what they owe.
Make me generous in ways I cannot calculate. Reckless, even — the way the manager was reckless, and was commended for it.
In the name of Jesus, who settled the account we could never repay. Amen.
