We don’t have to live like this.
Award-winning economist Isabella Weber bucks the trend and rejects many of her peers who remain subservient to neo-liberalism, unregulated capitalism, and the politics of complacency.
She was one of the first economists to endorse Zohran Mamdani’s ambitious reforms before they became nationally popular. She criticizes both the right-wing politics of Reaganism and the milquetoast “reforms” of modern Democrats who continue to tell us that universal health care is impossible even as they support bailing out our corporations and helping billionaires.
The status quo, according to Weber, is no longer sustainable, especially as humanity endures successive waves of crises and shocks, which include climate change, wars, and income inequality. Using her expertise, Weber charts a better way forward, which she describes as “anti fascist economics.”
This includes centering human dignity, affordability, and democracy ahead of profit and capital. You don’t need to engage in a mutually exclusive relationship. Sadly, Western economies, regardless of political allegiances, have prizes profit and capital over people. Now, we are all suffering as a result. Still, these politicians will not change unless we replace them or loudly promote a politics and economy of transformation.
Weber outlines these ideas in her new book Anti-Fascist Economics: A Defense of Affordability, Dignity, and Democracy.
