There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.— Romans 8:1
Paul could have written that there is no condemnation for those who try hard, or for those who feel forgiven. He wrote “for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 8:1). If we count close variations such as “in Him” and “in the Lord,” some form of that phrase appears in his letters well over a hundred times.
We often hear “in Christ” as another way of saying we believe in Jesus or try to follow Him. Those things matter. But on the night before the cross, Jesus gave His disciples a picture that goes further.
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15:5). No one leans a branch against a vine or ties it on with string. It grows out of the vine, and the sap that keeps it green comes from the vine. When Jesus says “Abide in me, and I in you” (John 15:4), He is describing one shared life. Christians have long called this union with Christ: being joined to Him and living from His life.
Jesus also tells us what holds the branch in place: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love” (John 15:9). This union is made of love, and the love started on His side. We did not reach for Him first; He loved us and drew us in.
Paul explains what this union means in Romans 6. Those who were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death and buried with Him, so that “just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4). In Christ, what happened to Him is counted as ours. His death paid our debt, and His righteousness was credited to us.
Martin Luther explained this with a picture from marriage. When a bride and groom marry, what belongs to each now belongs to both. Christ, the Bridegroom, takes the soul’s sins as His own, and the soul receives His righteousness. Many Christians since have called it the joyful exchange.
This is why Romans 8:1 can speak with such confidence. We are not spared condemnation because our own record has improved. We stand on His record now.
Scripture calls Satan the one who accuses God’s people “day and night before our God” (Rev. 12:10). Many of his charges are true, because we did those things. But every charge is brought against a debt that has already been paid, and the Judge does not reopen a case He has closed.
Think of the air around us. We hardly notice it all day, yet none of us could live a minute without it. We are in the air, and the air is in us. That is close to what Jesus meant by “I in you.” Jesus said that apart from Him we can do nothing, and the air shows why: we live in Christ, and Christ lives in us.
So being in Christ is larger than any feeling we have or any discipline we keep. It is where we live. Paul says that through Christ “we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand” (Rom. 5:2). We are already standing there, and there is nothing left to earn.
Many of us still live as though God’s verdict depends on how this week went. On good days we feel close to Him. On bad days the old accusations come back, and we start defending ourselves again.
The bad days do not pull the branch off the vine. Old habits of sin still need healing, and the Spirit is at work on them. But where we stand was settled at the cross, and it was never ours to settle.
We stand in Christ, on His record, and the verdict there is already in.
