What gave me HOPE this week:
One for my husband:
His Milwaukee Brewers are going to the World Series for the first time since 1982.
One for me:
We finally got some art hung in the entry to our public gallery/office space. Because art and creators give me hope.
In 2027, my husband will discuss architecture, urban design, human settlement, and resilience with a series of invited speakers and guests. The art will be on view for attendees. This is primarily my husband’s project, but I hope to provide space for creators to escape and create.
I have been fortunate to befriend and share residency space with many gifted creators. This is an all-male wall (though the overall collection is majority female and trans.)
Snow scenes (top tier and second tier left): Photographs by NYC-and-Wellfleet MA-based photographer . GO HERE to find out more about him and view his work. (Robert and I have been friends for at least two decades. We met during our aughts blogging days.)
Crow (second tier middle): By Irish storyteller, musician, artist, and teacher Paul Ó Colmáin. (I first met Paul at a private house concert of Irish music and last saw him in 2022 while on residency in Ireland.)
Moose and porcupines (second tier right and bottom tier right): By Canadian artist and engraver Luc Nadeau. (The only artist in this series I’ve not met. We were drawn to his work during visits to Montréal and purchased several small pieces we could afford.)
Welsh highland scene (bottom tier left): By British artist and printmaker Roy Willingham (Gift from the artist. We shared residency in Corris, Wales in 2018. I was falling apart from a second round of chemo and steroids and could not find my writing voice. Or any voice. Roy was quiet and kind and gave thoughtful chat at the pub next door. He had no idea what I was grappling with, but this gifted piece always reminds me that decent people exist and I am a survivor.)
My photographs of art never do the art justice. But I like these pieces together. Pondering them while I research and write gives me hope.
What gave YOU hope this week?
