“Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground.”— Matthew 25:24–25
Jesus tells of a man who leaves on a long journey and puts his property into the hands of three servants. One receives five talents, another two, another one, “each according to his ability” (Matt. 25:15). The first two put the money to work. The third digs a hole and buries his.
When the master returns, the third servant does not blame bad luck. He offers a description of his master: a man who reaps where he did not sow and gathers where he scattered no seed. Part of what he says is true. God can bring a harvest out of nothing. He does not need our small contribution to accomplish His purposes.
So the servant reaches what sounds like a sensible conclusion. If the master can harvest without planting, what difference will one talent make? Better to keep it safe and hand it back: “Here, you have what is yours” (Matt. 25:25).
The master calls him “wicked and slothful” (Matt. 25:26).
When we read Scripture, we observe what it says, interpret what it means, and apply it to our lives. This servant handled the first two steps well enough. He knew his master’s power. His mistake came at the last step: he knew something true about God and drew the wrong conclusion about his own life.
With that knowledge, he called his master hard, admitted he was afraid, and treated the talent as a test he might fail. It never occurred to him that it was trust.
A talent was not pocket change. Scholars commonly estimate it at about twenty years’ wages for a day laborer. The master put a fortune into this servant’s hands and left. Being entrusted with it was the gift, and the servant handled it like a liability.
The other two servants likely knew the same things about their master. What set them apart was that they understood what they had been given and put it to use. They traded with the money, and it came back multiplied. The master’s word to each of them was the same: “Enter into the joy of your master” (Matt. 25:21, 23).
God gives us grace so that it can move through us to others. Jesus described God’s giving as “good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over” (Luke 6:38). Grace in Scripture is always given in full measure.
The third servant lived as though he had very little, and as though his job was to keep it from being lost. He returned exactly what he received and thought that was faithfulness. But a gift handed back unused is a gift that was never really received.
Most of us know a good deal about God. We know He is able, that He does not depend on us, that He can raise up help from anywhere. All of that is true, but what do we conclude from it?
If our knowledge of God’s power has quietly become a reason to leave our own talent in the ground, we know the right things and are still missing the grace.
What has been placed in our hands? It might be a gift for teaching, a home with an extra chair at the table, patience someone near us badly needs, or a word from Scripture we have heard many times.
It is possible to say many right things about God and still bury what He gave us. The servant in this story could describe his master’s power. He could not see his master’s kindness in the talent sitting in his own palm.
God did not entrust His grace to us because He needed our help. He chose to trust us with it, and that choice is itself grace.
Whatever is in our hands today was put there in trust.
Stay here for a moment.
What God has placed in your hands came with His trust, and that trust is grace.
Stay with that.
Lord, I know many true things about You. I know You are able, and I know You do not need me to accomplish what You have planned.
Yet I have sometimes used that knowledge as a reason to stay still, keeping what You gave me safe and calling it faithfulness.
Open my eyes to what is in my hands. Let me see it for what it is, a gift You trusted me with.
Your grace is full, pressed down and running over. Let it move through me to the people You have placed near me, and let me not hand it back to You unused.
In the name of Jesus, who held nothing back. Amen.
