The Trump regime is probably seeking some sort of face-saving economic deal in which it can get a piece of the economic action in the Russian region of Ukraine in return for backing a peace plan. And Russia may very well make such a concession -- may even have proposed it -- to stop the war from expanding as the rightwing nationalists controlling NATO threaten to do. Such a pact would be analogous to the nonaggression pact the USSR signed with Hitler after the US, Brits, France and Poland refused to form a mutual defense pact with the Soviet Union.
