What if you could experience someone else’s death… without being the one who was dying?
For centuries, people across cultures have described something far less common than a traditional near-death experience (NDE): it’s called a shared death experience (SDE). Healthy, conscious people (including doctors, nurses, and family members) have described experiencing phenomena seemingly connected to someone who is in the process of dying. Some witnesses report seeing hovering apparitions, mysterious lights, mist, sounds, or even figures seemingly guiding the dying person into another realm. In some cases, multiple people in the same room claim to witness the same phenomenon. And sometimes the person is thousands of miles away....!
How is this possible?!
Are these hallucinations? An elaborate delusional response to grief? Or could SDEs point to something much deeper about consciousness, death, and what happens when we die?
