The process of assigning judges to cases is supposed to be entirely random, but in recent years, it’s been amazing how certain judges seemed to get assigned cases they had no business being anywhere near. DC Chief District Judge James “Jeb” Boasberg has been one of these. Law professor Jonathan Turley is one legal analyst who has examined the prevalence of “judge-shopping” --- and also what might be termed district-shopping --- by attorneys to help ensure the outcome of their cases. A case heard in, say, DC, might go very differently from the same case filed in, say, South Florida.
This might be especially true if the lead prosecutor and his black-robed friends have no sense of legal boundaries whatsoever. Such an observation brings to mind “Special Counsel” Jack Smith, who as far as anyone can tell has never encountered an ethical line he wouldn’t cross. To borrow a slogan from the Canadian Mounted Police, Smith “always gets his man,” no matter what he has to do, and with the ongoing release of incriminating documents, we’re now finding out just how far he’s eagerly gone.
