Something peculiar happens whenever the financial system starts approaching another one of its periodic near-death experiences. Gold gets hammered. Silver gets absolutely slaughtered. The financial press dutifully explains that investors are worried about interest rates, the dollar, inflation, deflation, or whatever economic statistic happens to be convenient that morning. And millions of investors are left wondering why the assets they purchased to protect themselves against financial calamity are behaving as though the calamity has already been canceled.
I’ve watched this movie enough times to recognize the plot. And I have a theory about what’s happening that goes well beyond the usual explanations involving margin calls, technical support, and speculative excess. I believe precious metals are frequently hit preemptively when serious trouble is approaching, either through deliberate intervention, the self-serving behavior of powerful market participants, or some combination of the two. The practical effect is remarkably consistent: gold and especially silver enter the crisis with much of their speculative energy already drained away.
Consider what has happened this year. Silver reached an extraordinary $121.60 an ounce in January 2026. By October 30, it had collapsed below $50, a decline of nearly 60%. Gold, meanwhile, fell from almost $5,600 to below $3,900. Both metals were already experiencing the sort of punishment normally associated with a financial disaster. Yet the world’s financial institutions remain standing, the banking system is functioning, and the Federal Reserve is still talking about raising interest rates to contain inflation.
Which raises an interesting question. What exactly are these markets discounting?
The 2008 Playbook
In March 2008, silver traded above $20 an ounce. By late October, it was below $9. Gold suffered its own violent correction as the banking system came apart. Investors who thought they had purchased protection against the collapse of the financial system discovered that their protection was temporarily collapsing along with everything else.
The explanations sounded reasonable. Hedge funds needed cash. Banks were deleveraging. Investors sold whatever they could sell rather than what they wanted to sell. Margin clerks were making investment decisions for people who had run out of collateral. All perfectly valid explanations, and each undoubtedly contributed to the carnage.
But those explanations don’t necessarily tell the entire story. Gold and silver were sending increasingly uncomfortable signals about the health of the monetary system before the crisis reached its climax. Then the signals became much quieter, just as the public was beginning to understand how much trouble the banks were in. Whether that sequence resulted from ordinary market mechanics, deliberate intervention, or both is a question worth asking.
And what happened after the forced selling finally exhausted itself? Silver eventually rocketed to nearly $49 in 2011. Gold climbed above $1,900. Investors who interpreted the 2008 metals crash as proof that the precious-metals bull market was finished missed one of the most spectacular advances in modern monetary history.
The banking system had survived, but only because governments and central banks supplied extraordinary amounts of financial support. The metals eventually reflected the monetary consequences of that rescue.
I believe we’re approaching another version of that sequence.
Nobody Has to Issue a Memo
I’ve spent a lifetime studying incentives, first as an attorney and later as a financial commentator. One lesson has remained remarkably consistent: incentives matter more than intentions.
Think about the incentives confronting the people who operate our monetary system. Governments require a functioning Treasury market to finance enormous deficits. Central banks need the public to maintain confidence in their currencies. Banks and institutional investors benefit from orderly markets, available credit, and confidence that financial authorities remain in control.
Now imagine silver racing from $50 to $150 while Treasury yields are rising, banks are struggling, and investors are beginning to question the government’s ability to finance its obligations. Such a move would attract attention far beyond the relatively small community of precious-metals investors. It would become a referendum on the purchasing power of money itself.
Gold politely announces that something may be wrong with the currency. Silver grabs a bullhorn and tells the entire neighborhood.
There are powerful incentives to discourage that message from becoming too loud, especially when confidence is already fragile. That doesn’t establish the existence of some secret committee directing every trade on the COMEX. Markets rarely require that kind of coordination. Large institutions responding to similar incentives can produce remarkably similar outcomes without anyone having to distribute instructions.
Of course, there is also documented evidence that manipulation in precious-metals trading is quite real. In 2020, JPMorgan Chase agreed to pay more than $920 million to resolve charges involving deceptive trading in precious-metals and Treasury markets. Federal regulators described years of spoofing activity in which traders placed orders they intended to cancel, creating misleading impressions of supply and demand.
That case doesn’t prove the current decline is being orchestrated. But it certainly disposes of the comfortable fiction that manipulation of precious-metals markets exists only in the imaginations of disgruntled silver investors.
The distinction matters. I don’t need to prove that every price collapse was engineered to recognize that these markets are vulnerable to manipulation, leverage, and the concentrated actions of institutions with enormous financial resources.
And silver is particularly vulnerable. It occupies an awkward position between monetary asset and industrial commodity. When investors fear inflation, silver can rise because it is money. When investors fear recession, it can fall because factories may need less of it. When investors fear a financial crisis, leveraged holders can be forced to sell it regardless of what they believe it’s worth.
That creates a peculiar situation in which silver can be fundamentally attractive over the long term while being treated like toxic waste over the short term.
The Next Crisis Is Already Taking Shape
Look at the circumstances confronting us today. The United States has accumulated more than $40 trillion in federal debt. Annual deficits remain enormous. Interest payments are consuming an increasingly uncomfortable share of government revenue. The Federal Reserve faces persistent inflation even as higher borrowing costs threaten financial stability.
And now we have the enormous AI investment boom, financed in part by expectations of future revenues that may or may not materialize on schedule. There are extraordinary amounts of money committed to data centers, semiconductor infrastructure, power generation, and related investments. If expected returns disappoint, losses won’t necessarily remain confined to technology stocks.
They rarely do.
A serious liquidation in the broader equity market could force institutions to raise cash wherever they can find it. Gold and silver would be obvious candidates. That would produce another round of selling precisely when investors begin recognizing that the financial system is in greater danger than they previously believed.
Here’s where I think the story becomes particularly interesting. The same tightening of financial conditions that is crushing precious metals could eventually force the Federal Reserve to reverse course.
Higher interest rates may temporarily support the dollar and discourage precious-metals speculation. But they also increase the government’s refinancing burden and place enormous pressure on leveraged borrowers. At some point, the authorities could face a choice between defending the currency’s purchasing power and defending the financial system that depends upon it.
History suggests they will defend the system.
That was the underlying logic of the post-2008 rescue, and I see little reason to expect today’s political and financial leadership to embrace widespread defaults and prolonged austerity as their preferred alternative.
Once markets begin anticipating that change, the economics of holding gold and silver could change dramatically. The same investors who couldn’t sell fast enough may discover that the metals they abandoned are suddenly among the most desirable assets in the world.
And here’s the problem with knocking silver down before a crisis. You may be able to reduce the price from which its next advance begins. You may even delay the inevitable reckoning. But you haven’t eliminated the underlying demand for protection against currency depreciation and monetary instability.
You’ve simply postponed the moment when that demand becomes impossible to ignore.
What I’m Watching Now
I’m not going to pretend I can identify the exact day silver bottoms or the precise price at which gold begins its next advance. I’ve seen enough supposedly infallible forecasts expire worthless to know better.
What interests me is the behavior of the metals relative to the financial system around them. If Treasury yields decline while gold and silver continue falling, that may indicate the selling is being driven more by forced liquidation than by deteriorating monetary fundamentals. If mining shares begin resisting further declines while bullion makes new lows, that could indicate informed capital is beginning to anticipate a recovery.
Most importantly, I’ll be watching for any indication that financial conditions are deteriorating enough to force a change in monetary policy. That could involve credit-market stress, trouble refinancing government obligations, institutional failures, or a broader collapse in confidence surrounding highly leveraged investments.
The next leg down in precious metals could still be ugly. Silver has demonstrated repeatedly that it can punish both bulls and bears with equal enthusiasm. Investors who confuse being right about the eventual direction with being right about the timing can get themselves financially disemboweled.
But I believe the larger monetary argument remains intact. The United States cannot indefinitely compound its debt, expand its fiscal obligations, and refinance increasingly expensive liabilities without consequences. The pressure eventually has to emerge somewhere.
Precious metals have historically been among the places where that pressure becomes visible.
Which brings me back to the current massacre in gold and silver. Perhaps the conventional explanations are sufficient. Perhaps the decline reflects nothing more sinister than excessive speculation, changing interest-rate expectations, and the liquidation of leveraged positions.
But suppose the market is once again getting the metals selloff out of the way before a much larger financial disturbance arrives. Suppose this is the period when the price of monetary insurance gets crushed just before the public begins desperately searching for it.
That’s the possibility I believe investors should be considering now.
In 2008, many people concluded that gold and silver had failed because they fell during the early stages of the financial crisis. What they failed to appreciate was that the crisis itself would ultimately create the conditions for a much larger advance.
Seventeen years later, the debt is vastly larger, the financial system is even more complex, and the political appetite for accepting the consequences of monetary discipline appears to be nonexistent.
My suspicion is that we’re witnessing the preparation for another monetary reckoning, whether anyone is deliberately orchestrating the metals decline or merely taking advantage of it.
You can smash the smoke detector.
You can’t put out the fire by breaking the alarm.
