I had something else planned for this week, but I woke up to this reader link from Religion News with a host of questions. It’s worth your time to read the whole thing. GO HERE.
Let’s look at specific language Webbon used in his since-deleted tweet:
“Mike Huckabee is both a traitor and a ‘Judeo-Christian
,'” the post read.heretic
(For those unfamiliar with Huckabee, he is a Southern Baptist White Christian Nationalist pastor, former Arkansas governor, father of White Christian Nationalist Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Zionist, and current US Ambassador to Israel. We’ll get into why he and Webbon aren’t in the same WCN camps tomorrow.)
Many have called Pete Hegseth’s live-streamed firing squad execution of a disabled Muslim Palestinian man barbaric. But I haven’t seen anyone talk about how this aligns with Hegseth’s craving for modern Crusades, where “true Christians” rid the world of * infidels* and
The words * infidel* and
Infidels were non-Christians. Think Muslims, Jews, and also those who held fast to any other faith or no faith.
Heretics were Christians who disagreed with those who set themselves up as “true Christians.” So basically anyone who disagreed with Rome. Before the Reformation, the term heretic applied to any Christian sect that disagreed with Rome. Post-Reformation, Protestants became the primary heretics.
Anyone looking for a deeper dive into this history can GO HERE and read more at Christian Hegemony.
While I can find no record of Hegseth calling Nidal Malik Hasan’s public execution by firing squad the killing of an infidel, he has long deployed anti-Muslim rhetoric like the phrase “radical Islamist” to describe Hasan.
It isn’t a stretch to equate the phrase radical Islamist with infidel.
I believe this public execution is an attempt to normalize public Inquisition-style killings and Crusade-style attacks. It is part of Hegseth’s (and his spiritual daddy Doug Wilson’s) desire to bring back the Crusades.
Webbon’s rhetoric isn’t a coincidence; I believe it is coordinated language and a partner to Hegseth’s:
And he uses the medieval Crusader/Inquisition word heretic. In my view, this usage is a deliberate reference to and embrace of Christianity’s bloody, inhumane history.
The great Substack points out calls for Crusader/Inquisition-style public executions aren’t new. And they also aren’t “fringe” and “just a few crazy people.” Millions and millions of White Christian Nationalists revere, respect, and emulate the men in this camp.
To understand how serious White Christian Nationalists are about killing anyone who opposes them, let’s review my 12 April 2024 newsletter Reader Question: How Do Pro-Life Christians View the Death Penalty?
And whoever controls the government (in our case, a bunch of radicalized extremist White Christian Nationalists) gets to be God’s avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.
Hegseth is acting out this self-ordained role by carrying out his public execution of a radical Islamist (his words) infidel (my tying his phrase with the history he wants to repeat.)
Webbon is acting out this self-ordained role by calling for the public execution of a Christian who disagrees with him, someone he has publicly called a heretic.
Because Mike Huckabee’s WCN camp is a threat to Webbon’s WCN camp.
Remember when I said different WCN camps hate each other? That they’d fight a version of the Thirty Years’ War over whose Christianity will be forced on everyone if they ever consolidated power?
If more Americans understand these stakes, this could wind up being a good thing for our country. Tomorrow, I’ll dive deeper into the fissures between Webbon’s and Huckabee’s camps, because we need to get these people fighting each other instead of threatening the rest of us.
