TRIGGER WARNING: This newsletter discusses sexual assault.
Near the end of yesterday’s long newsletter about a recent piece of WCN propaganda in *The Atlantic, *I made a point about the Institute for Family Studies’ (IFS) flawed US sex-and-religion findings:
But they also didn’t factor in a common issue many female WCN survivors will identify: The Christian women who responded (as being satisfied with their sex lives) may have been as honest as they knew how to be, but they are indoctrinated to say they’re happy with their sex liveseven if their husbands can’t find their clitorises or never initiate sex for female pleasure. Whatever their husbands give them sexually is godly and appropriate, and these women are told not to question it.
So let’s imagine you’re a White Christian Nationalist female.
You were reared in a WCN church and school where sex education was DON’T HAVE SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE.
When you got your period, it was equated with Eve’s sin in the Garden of Eden; you had no idea it was tied to your reproductive cycle.
No one told you how babies happened.
You didn’t know what your clitoris was or how it related to sexual enjoyment, nor did you understand why you got so wet when you had ~~sexy~~ sinful thoughts.
You were a virgin on your wedding night. Thankfully, your gynecologist explained the pain you’d experience on penetration.
But you never understood why you cried the first time you watched the film Lady Bird. You lost your virginity the same way: No foreplay; impaling yourself on top; pretending afterward that it was orgasmic.
You didn’t know how to express your sexual needs to your husband, because you were indoctrinated to believe females didn’t have sexual needs. A wife existed to please her husband sexually; he wasn’t required to please her.
So you mostly had sex when he wanted it. You definitely had it when you didn’t want to. You pretended to enjoy it. And you told anyone who asked that your sex life was off-the-charts, because that’s what Godly Christian Wives said about Good Christian Husbands.
If I had been a participant in the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) survey when I was twenty-five years old, I would’ve said our sex life was perfect. Offered nothing but praise for my then-husband’s prowess. And claimed to be ecstatically satisfied.
And I would have been lying.
Innocently, not deliberately. I had been indoctrinated from kindergarten to believe that aspect of my marriage was all WCN God ever meant for it to be. I would have extolled my sexual satisfaction because I didn’t know any better.
According to this 2018 report in the * Washington Post* - you know, back when they did more real journalism and MeToo was a thing - the then-functioning Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that 1 in 4 US women experience sexual abuse. They made no distinction or carve-out for evangelical/Christian women.
Sexual abuse also occurs in marriage when a woman is told she must always have sex when her husband wants it; she can never deny his needs; and she must always go along with his sexual desires and fantasies even when she doesn’t share them and/or they hurt her.
Scrolling through this data from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center put me on the verge of tears.
1 in 5 US women are victims of rape or attempted rape
81% of US women are victims of sexual harassment or assault
1 in 3 female rape/attempted rape victims were between 11 - 17 the first time it happened
51.1% of sexual assaults on females were committed by intimate partners - like Good Christian Husbands
This data doesn’t segregate Christians from secular folks. So let’s look at some more information. It includes child sexual abuse data, but bear with me. I’m building a theme.
Some of their statistics:
Over 7,000 claims of sexual abuse by church staff, congregation members, volunteers, or the clergy were made to just three insurance companies over a 20-year period (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 2007)
In the average American congregation of 400 persons, with women representing, on average, 60% of the congregation, there are, on average of 7 women who have experienced clergy sexual misconduct
Of the entire sample, 8% report having known about CSM occurring in a congregation they have attended. Therefore, in the average American congregation of 400 congregants, there are, on average, 32 persons who have experienced CSM in their community of faith
More than 30% of pastors are functionally addicted to Internet pornographyMore than 15% of pastors engage in sexual behavior that they consider inappropriate
I include one compilation from .
Since the IFS believes it’s fair to insert their unstudied opinions into official survey results, allow me to do likewise as a survivor of the WCN cult.
If many of the WCN women who answered this IFS “survey” believed they could be - I’m going to use a WCN term - Judgment Day honest, many might have admitted that they never achieve orgasm during sex. Because for WCN women, *my husband is happy *means I am a Godly Christian wife and I am happy because my Good Christian Husband is happy.
A few might not know what orgasm** **means and/or they would equate it with male ejaculation.
A portion of the sample would say their husbands always initiate sex.
A portion would define sex as my husband puts his penis in my vagina and ejaculates. Sex isn’t foreplay. It has nothing to do with her pleasure.
Those of us who escaped see this happening. We beg more Americans - especially white men - to take this seriously, only to be called hysterical and overreacting and shrill.
We open a journal we’ve relied on for ages for good information and see the same twisted WCN garbage we escaped being parroted on its pages as esteemed journalism.
And we feel like our lives are a twisted version of Groundhog Day. Or WCN is the virus in every zombie tale we’ve ever seen. No matter how we deconstruct, reorder our lives, and find our own power, White Christian Nationalism keeps coming for us.
Point out WCN language wherever you see it.
Educate your connections about the pervasiveness of WCN in this regime.
Show up at local pro-democracy groups and public meetings, and push back against every WCN/billionaire initiative.
Refuse to support organizations (like The Atlantic) that are normalizing this kind of discourse.
Help boost midterm turnout however you feel comfortable and useful.
Work with local groups to continue momentum after the midterms, because We the People can lead ourselves.
