What the hell is happening to men around the world?
Why are they so obsessed with high testosterone levels, getting their heads bashed in an UFC ring, refusing to wash their ass or private parts because of fear of turning gay, and supporting alleged “alpha male” fraudsters such as the criminal Tate brothers?
Why are they so enamored by weak, insecure, cosplaying clowns such as Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump, who are nakedly corrupt, ignorant, and terrified? Why do they take medical advice from lughead Joe Rogan, who refuses to take the COVID vaccine even as more than a million Americans died from the worst pandemic in our lifetime?
Why are they choosing to become “content creators” who promote anti-woke hate against women, immigrants, and transgender people instead of targeting the broligarchy and techno-fascists who are literally profiting off the destruction of the post WW2 and annihilation of our public health care infrastructure?
Acclaimed non-fiction writer Jon Ronson attempted to find some answers in his wildly entertaining, absurd, and horrifying new book, The Castle: Adventures in the World of Unraveling Men. Ronson isn’t interested in writing a polemic or delivering a screed. Instead, he went and actually talked to some of these broken, scary, and radicalized men who, in part, represent a generation of men desperately trying to find purpose and meaning in a world where they’re losing jobs, losing access to healthcare, and can’t afford a college education.
His journey takes him to a misogynist millionaire who created a fantasy “castle” in Connecticut where he seeks to become the next Hugh Hefner. He also talks to a struggling father seeking to make ends meet who initially finds success as a lawn care influencer on YouTube but whose life becomes unhinged as the algorithm rewards him for posting more absurd, harmful “content.” He interviews nepo baby Dan Bilzerian, who influences legions of men around the world, culminating in a recent, failed campaign for the House in which he attacks Rep. Randy Fine with Nazi, AI-generated smears.
