I’ve been thinking about this story all day. [Gift link]
The story of Malachi and his friends, who chose to explore the life of Joseph Stalin for a History Day competition in a remote corner of Texas, reveals the power history has to bring meaning to our own lives.
But there is much more going on here. We watch middle school boys embrace history and use a state competition to break free from the confines of their local community, gaining a glimpse of a much larger stage and of what might be possible for them.
Running through the entire story is the question of why Stalin. That question is the story’s real strength, because it shows how unpredictable the lessons we draw from the past can be when students are allowed to explore it without fear or intimidation.
Good history education begins with curiosity, and curiosity does not always lead where adults expect.
As a former teacher, I found this deeply moving.
