The question I get asked the most by young women is, should I have children?
I’ve been a mom for 25 years. My kids are 25, 23, and 18. I’m not special. Anybody’s whole life after they have kids is going to be about their kids, unless they’re an ill parent. So I’m an authority.
The first thing I tell them is that you don’t want to ask me, because I had all my kids before smartphones were invented. That isn’t a casual invention. It changed our psychology. It changed every aspect of joy, reading, seeing the world.
I went off the pill in 1999 to have my first kid. I didn’t have the internet in my hand 24/7, so it was a really fucking simple decision.
More credentials. I still haven’t seen that Brie Larson movie Room, because it came out when my youngest kid was small and it made me sick to my stomach. I can’t even watch movies like that. I don’t think I’d be very good in a dangerous situation being the only parent responsible for three children, which is something I didn’t consider when I had them.
That is the résumé.
Beyond this paywall are extremely good points * the situation where I’d say yes*, and your mother.
