We’re one week out from the midterms. The noise is deafening, the distraction machine is working overtime, and everyone I know is on edge, a rare bipartisan achievement.
One antidote to election anxiety? Action.
Vote early if you can. Ideally vote in person or hand-deliver your mail ballot to an authorized drop box or election office, where permitted. The fewer things left to chance on Election Day, the better.
Then help someone else vote. Have a trusted voter guide? Share it. Wear your I Voted sticker. Post that you’ve voted. Voting is contagious; be the contagion.
Want to do more? Offer someone a ride to the polls. Help a friend find their polling place and hours. If someone is worried about intimidation, accompany them.
Concerned about election interference? Help document it. If you see something funny, record only where permitted, keep your distance from voters and election workers, and report suspected intimidation or obstruction. Video evidence can help establish what actually happened when the inevitable accusations begin.
Democracy has many flaws. Fortunately, it still offers a productive outlet for anxiety. Voting ends November 3.
