The Document: The report begins by discussing the incident involving Kenneth Arnold, who claimed to have seen nine peculiar-looking aircraft without tails, flying in a chain-like line and "warred in and out of the high mountain passes." This incident led to the term "flying saucer," which caught the public's imagination. The report notes that there have been a steady stream of similar reports since then, including sightings of "flying saucers" prior to the Arnold incident. The investigator, Dr. Hynek, was asked to review the data and eliminate the patently astronomical incidents to determine which others might have such an explanation.
