Another day, another realization that “money can’t buy taste.” New photos dropped of Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, looking like Miami club rats, and once again, people want to know how someone with so much money can look this tacky:
This tweet is not an isolated incident. There was similar drama a while back about Lauren Sanchez’s Met Gala 𝕏outfit and 𝕏wedding dress. And it’s not just Lauren Sanchez. Many tacky ultra-rich people have earned ire online from Kim Kardashian to Paris Hilton (at the height of her fame) to Elon Musk’s ill-fitting T-shirts and skinny jeans to Mark Zuckerberg’s new “only white kid in the hip hop dance club” look.
The refrain is always the same: money can’t buy taste. The assumption here is that a super-rich person should dress a certain way—a certain “tasteful” way, which just so happens to read “rich.” And if they don’t, they’re not really worthy of their money or their fame, because they have failed to be born with taste.
And of course, while money can’t buy taste, they are somewhat synonymous. While we’re supposed to pretend they’re unrelated, it would not be so remarkable to notice that money can’t buy taste if taste was not in some way adjacent to money. Because of course the fuck it is. As I’ve written about before, even the “anti-capitalist” fashion snobs can use “taste” as a surrogate for “looking rich” so they can dodge any obsession with money and class, and claim that, no, they don’t care about looking expensive, they care about having taste (which looks expensive.)
