Today, Marvell() is paying a huge sum to acquire Lumentum(****). Looking back at Lumentum’s rise reflects how the value of optical interconnects is changing in the AI era.
When it was spun off from JDSU in 2015, the company was worth only about $1 billion. Ten years later, its quarterly revenue has surpassed $1 billion, making it an important player in the AI data center optical communications supply chain.
The key driver was the rapid growth in demand for lasers. As data transfer between AI chips and servers keeps climbing, traditional copper interconnects increasingly face bandwidth bottlenecks, and optical interconnects have become more important. Lumentum’s lasers, optical modules, and related components are now in short supply. According to its CEO, capacity for some components has been reserved by customers through early 2029, and customers have even begun locking in orders for 2030.
This also explains why Marvell chose to spend over $100 billion to acquire Lumentum outright.
