According to Reuters, an AI interconnect startup called CScale recently closed a $145 million funding round, with investment arms of both Nvidia() and Intel() participating.
CScale was founded in 2023. Its CEO, Martin Lund, previously led chip and hardware systems at networking giant Cisco Systems. The company’s focus is optical interconnect technology for large-scale AI data centers, aimed at overcoming the limits of traditional copper interconnects in reach, bandwidth, and power consumption.
The report notes that, unlike efforts that simply chase higher transmission rates, CScale is more concerned with system reliability inside hyperscale AI clusters.
Is copper interconnect hitting its limit?
The debate between copper cabling and fiber in data center wiring has gone on for years. As data center network speeds keep rising, that competition is shifting.
