At OFC 2026, Samsung Foundry officially announced its entry into the silicon photonics (SiPh) foundry market and unveiled its 300mm platform. Its roadmap plans to launch optical engines in 2027 and offer turnkey CPO services by 2029. This article analyzes its strategy.
Why Samsung Is Entering the Silicon Photonics Field
Samsung Foundry’s revenue is approximately one-sixth that of TSMC (as of 2025, Samsung Foundry’s revenue was about $15–18 billion, while TSMC’s exceeded $90 billion). Competing solely in advanced logic nodes will not be enough to close this gap. On March 17, 2026, at OFC 2026 in Los Angeles, Samsung Foundry opened a new front. The company formally announced its entry into the silicon photonics (SiPh) device market through two conference papers.
Samsung’s roadmap is as follows: PIC production readiness in 2026, TC (thermocompression) bonded optical engines in 2027, transition to hybrid bonding in 2028, and the start of turnkey CPO (Co-Packaged Optics) services in 2029.
